The phrase "low-impact dye" covers a range of chemistry and process choices, and not all of them save what the label implies. The ones that matter are measurable.
Where the impact lives
Conventional exhaust dyeing uses large volumes of water and a long list of auxiliaries, much of which leaves in the effluent. The two levers that actually move the number are the chemistry and the water balance.
- Closed-loop colour with high fixation rates means more dye on the fibre and less in the water.
- Selected reactive and fibre-reactive systems cut both the salt load and the rinse cycles.
- Cold and low-liquor processes reduce the energy embedded in heating the bath.
What you can claim
A claim has to be backed by the certification and the process data, not the marketing word. The measurable outcomes — lower water per kilogram of fabric, lower salt, fewer rinse cycles — are the ones a slow-fashion brand can document.
The credible claim is "X% less water versus our conventional route on the same fibre", with the process data behind it. The vague claim is "eco dye", which an auditor will ask you to prove.
