Branded Packaging That Retailers Accept

Buyers and retailers notice packaging the way they notice a sloppy label. Here is how to set up a branded packaging programme that survives a pickup and a return cycle.

Lukas Brenner ยท Head of Compliance & MaterialsPublished

Packaging is where a brand leaves evidence of its standard on the counter, in the bag and on the return. A garment can be well made and still look cheap if the packaging is inconsistent. A consistent packaging programme is also the difference between a smooth DC intake and a rejection at the receiving dock.

The layers of branded packaging

  • **Primary** โ€” the garment packaging itself: polybag, tissue, hangtag, neck label, any branded insert.
  • **Secondary** โ€” the carton: size, print or plain, barcode placement, pallet configuration.
  • **Tertiary** โ€” the pallet or container packing: how cartons are stacked, wrapped, labelled and documented.

Each layer has to be agreed before bulk so the factory builds to the same standard throughout the run.

Retailer requirements

Retailers and marketplaces often have specific packaging rules: polybag thickness and recycling symbols, hangtag placement, barcode position and quality, carton size and label format, and sometimes a requirement that the package be consumer-recyclable. If a retailer gives you a packaging spec, that spec is part of the PO, not a nice-to-have.

Return readiness

The package that ships must also survive a return without destroying the garment, the packaging or the first impression. That means a polybag that re-seals cleanly, packaging that does not get crumpled in transit, and enough structure that the garment arrives in the condition the brand promised.

Packaging is the first thing a customer sees and the first thing they touch. It is also the first thing a retailer checks. Get it right once, at the source, and every order looks the same.

How we handle it

We set the packaging spec with you at sampling โ€” primary, secondary and tertiary โ€” document it in the tech pack, and build to it in bulk. Recyclable and compostable options are available, and carton and pallet configurations are planned for the DC or the marketplace receiving standard.
